Monterey Bay – The best place to see sea lions

Most people know about the sea lions at Fisherman's Wharf Pier 39 in San Francisco – and it's sure fun to see them (as you can see, we were pretty happy to be within 100 feet of them!). As the day disappears, the view of the sunset from the pier is pretty spectacular as well.
But an even more interesting, and certainly lesser-known, place to see these fun sea creatures, and their cohorts the sea otters, is in Monterey Bay along the boardwalk at the Coast Guard Station.
There is plenty of parking, and it's a short stroll along the boardwalk. But make sure you stay to the left and keep a sharp eye on the rocks right along the side of the boardwalk – there, you may be lucky enough to see sea lions sprawled in the sun, enjoying life.
You can also expect to see a raft of sea lions playing together, just off the boardwalk, and otters twirling and rolling, and then stopping to eat a delectable morsel that they hold on their chest. See below for videos & photos of sea lions and an otter!
If you want to get even closer, rent a kayak from nearby Monterey Bay Kayaks, or even snorkel or dive from the adjacent beach.
We've found that come the cooler months, the numbers tend to dwindle; if you can visit between April and October, you're most likely to see larger groups.
This is a truly magical place, one you'll want to return to again and again – and we may see you there!
