San Francisco's Chinatown has no dearth of dim sum restaurants – but one of the most simply-named has proven so far to be by far the most "yummy" dim sum we've ever had – and we've tried it in a wide variety of places! Yummy Dim Sum is located in the heart of Chinatown at 930 Stockton Ave.
Everything in this tiny restaurant is hand-made in the back, and the offerings are different every day. There is usually a line, and most times I've been there, I've been the only Caucasian in the place – which was cause for interest by some of the patrons, as well as the servers. You enter and see a counter in front of you, with the dishes protected by glass. You order right there, choosing from a wide variety of small dishes. Many of the items are covered in bamboo steamers, and since I don't speak Chinese, I have to motion to see what's inside before ordering. The servers were accommodating, waiting while I decided what to try.
The first time I was there, after trying a couple dumplings, I was so astounded at the rich umami flavors in the freshest dough I've ever tasted that I went back for more ... and more ... until the others in the restaurant watched me eagerly to see if I could really eat all that I'd ordered (I couldn't – but it traveled well back to the hotel!) Better yet – more food than I could eat still cost less than $9!
There are not very many tables, so if you plan to eat there, choose an off time. This restaurant is open for breakfast and appears to be a favorite for people picking up on the way to work, as well as those grabbing a quick lunch. The hours are variable after COVID and not easily findable online.
Now, Yummy Dim Sum is a regular stop whenever we're in San Francisco – and every time, I get to try something new
